Located in Kingston, Washington on the western
side of Puget Sound, a beautiful natural area surrounded by
waterways and the mountain vistas of the Cascade and Olympic ranges,
Spectrum is one of eleven public schools in the North Kitsap School
District. In 2004-2005, Spectrum celebrated its 20th year
of service to the high school students of North Kitsap and
surrounding districts. The school and community are proud of
Spectrum’s many state and national recognitions for outstanding
educational programs, including two Awards of Special Merit from the
Grammy Foundation in Los Angeles in 2000 and 2002.
Spectrum is a
small school, with 135 students in grades ten through twelve and a
staff of twelve, and is known for its innovative programs and
instructional methods as well as its close student-teacher
relationships. Our school is attractive to students who choose to
learn in a more individualized climate and nontraditional
atmosphere. Our instructional approach is flexible and
developmental. We provide learning experiences which not only meet
all district and state graduation requirements, but also develop
individual and social responsibility and foster empathy for others,
appreciation for cultural diversity, personal courage and esteem,
and a lifelong respect for learning. Within a humanistic
environment, each student is encouraged to expand his or her
intelligence and to find a productive path for his or life. Our
curriculum emphasizes those skills necessary in a technological
society: problem-solving, negotiation, self-expression through
linguistic, musical, and visual media, the articulation of values,
risk-taking, and imagining.
Spectrum is
a partnership of teachers, students, parents, and the community that
promotes the intellectual and emotional development of every student
by providing a challenging liberal arts and technical education
centered on creative expression and respect for human dignity and
diversity.
The connection between
high school education and subsequent vocational direction is
becoming more important and thoughtful career planning is crucial.
In this regard, students inclined toward careers in the arts,
communications, or human services will find their education at
Spectrum most relevant to their future path. Students with other
career interests are also encouraged to apply for admission, but
should consider other educational options as well. Many Spectrum
students take courses at several institutions at the same time
including North Kitsap High School, PAL (Parent-Assisted Learning),
West Sound Technical Skills Center, and several community
colleges.
